The site is located at: 43°43.072’N and 7°1.165’E. It is 600 hectares in size, situated within the local authority area of Tourrettes-sur-Loup, approximately 30 km east of the city of Nice in the Alpes-Maritimes district. It falls within the Préalpes de Grasse Natura 2000 site and has an altitude ranging from 424 m to 1, 248 m at its peak, known as the ‘Pic des Courmettes’.
The site harbours an exceptional biodiversity and the high altitudinal range gives rise to a variety of habitats. Much of the site is dominated by evergreen Oak woodland, with a number of trees that are centuries old. There is evidence of ancient human settlements on the site, with standing stones and megaliths.
The site is open to the public and can be reached by road up to a car park at 850 m, where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view and find a small public information centre and a number of heritage buildings managed by A Rocha France.
Les Courmettes plans to maintain the diversity of habitats, fauna and flora and conserve priority habitats of European Community interest as well as develope an on-site infrastructure to ensure that Les Courmettes becomes an exemplary ecotourism destination.
Les Courmettes is seeking funding to create a VCA Management Plan and to register as a VCA. To support their efforts, you can make a donation through the above hotlinks.
